Leonard Peltier - the Reason For David Geffen’s Remarks Against Hillary

According to ABC News, the reason David Geffen dislikes the Clintons so much is because Bill Clinton refused to pardon Native American activist and convicted murderer, Leonard Peltier, in 2000.

I don’t know the specifics of the case, but ABCNews reports that in 1977, Peltier was convicted for allegedly killing two FBI agents in a shootout at South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. A brief Wikipedia search reveals that there’s been much debate over Peltier’ guilt and fairness of his trial. A number of high profile individuals and groups consider him a political prisoner. Early Sparring: Clinton v. Obama

I want to like Hillary Clinton. Really. I’d love to see a woman President. But this week’s smackdown between Clinton and Obama makes absolutely no sense to me. The Democratic Party is weak enough without having candidates squabble over who’s getting funding from the billionaires in Hollywood. Who cares?

Why not focus on the issues? Why not go after the failed policies of the last six years? Why not propose solutions to getting out of Iraq or ways to move the country forward? (Keep reading →)

Roe vs Wade Rhetoric From John McCain

With a little less than 21 months before the presidential election, ohn McCain has already pulled out the Republican trump card supporting overturning Roe vs Wade. The Houston Chronicle points out why this latest rant is a 180 degree flip flop from McCain’s 1999 campaign where he was quoted as saying

McCain said, “I’d love to see a point where Roe vs. Wade is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe vs. Wade, which would then force women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations.” A spokesman said that McCain “has a 17-year voting record of supporting efforts to overturn Roe vs. Wade. He does that currently, and will continue to do that as president.”

I guess he figures that now, it’s ok to force women in America to undergo back alley abortions… or perhaps he’s just living up to his reputation that he’ll say anything to get elected. So much for his “maverick” façade.

Separation of Church and State is Not A Lie

US Rep. Katherine Harris has been drumming up controversy during her campaign in Tampa with these remarks

Separation of church and state is “a lie we have been told,” Harris said in the interview, published Thursday, saying separating religion and politics is “wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers.”

“If you’re not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin,” Harris said.

Hillary Clinton Helps Lamont, Makes Cover of Time Magazine

With issues like Pluto, stem cells, and JonBenet in the news, Time Magazine has chosen to focus on Hillary Clinton’s upcoming presidential run. Their conclusions? Hillary’s “popular but polarizing.” Yeah, like we didn’t already know that.

According to their polls, Hillary leads all prominent Democratic presidential candidates, at 46%, just ahead of Al Gore’s 41%. I wonder if those numbers will convince him to run - regardless of what he says about changing careers. Not surprisingly, she rates horrible with Republicans, ok with independents, and pretty good with Democrats. 67% think she’s “politically moderate” - though it will be interesting to see how they react to Hillary’s offer to help Lamont raise money and even going so far as to offer her campaign strategist, Howard Wolfson.

I also have to give her props for pressuring Andrew von Eschenbach to finally approve emergency contraceptive Plan B for over-the-counter distribution without a prescription.

Plan B Finally Approved For Women 18 and Older

Plan B, the emergency contraceptive that was to be sold over the counter without a prescription has finally been approved for women 18 and older. If taken within 3 days of unprotected sex, it cuts the chance of pregnancy by 89%.

The issue came up as several Senators including Hillary Clinton refused to approve FDA candidate, Andrew von Eschenbach, who was undergoing Senate confirmation hearings. Von Eschenbach decided to approve the drug rather than be interrogated by a bunch of angry women’s rights proponents.

Lincoln Didn’t Say That

According to some Republicans, Abraham Lincoln allegedly said

“Congressmen who willfully take action during wartime that damage morale and undermine the military are saboteurs, and should be arrested, exiled or hanged,” that’s what President Abraham Lincoln said during the War Between the States.
